Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the number of accidents occurring in 1976, 1977 and 1978 on the following classes of machines (a) lathes, both metal and woodworking, (b) circular saws, (c) power presses, (d) horizontal boring machines, (e) radial arm drilling machines, (f) milling machines, horizontal and vertical, (g) band-saws, metal and woodworking, and (h) sand-mills, in foundry work; and what number of these accidents were investigated by health and safety inspectors;

(2) if the health and safety inspectors are able to establish particular causes of accidents produced by particular types or designs of machines or particular sets of circumstances without any operational or statistical need for a regular analysis, by cause, of the accidents investigated by inspectors; and if he will make a statement;

(3) what is the estimated number of accidents involving strains, sprains, and so on to the trunk, including slipped discs, in accident notifications received by the Health and Safety Inspectorate in 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978.
