Mr. Dodsworth

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will publish an up-to-date table of earnings for non-domiciled able seamen employed on British ships in terms of monthly basic pay showing country and amount of pay.

My Department does not normally keep records of wages paid to seamen on United Kingdom ships. The following table, which gives the required information as at October 1977,

* The rates indicated are believed to be the highest and lowest paid to Leading Seamen. Some companies consider the Sailor to equate most closely to the United Kingdom AB and, accordingly their rates vary between the following:—

Philippines paid 217.8$ (US)—sterling and local equivalents worked from this figure (at 1.74$ to £ sterling).
‡ This figure is made up as follows (at weekly rates): Basic rate—£34.00; average efficient service pay—£4.11½ AB certificate pay—£1.00; Stage II 5 per cent. earnings supplement—£4.11; making a total of £43.22½ a week or £187.31 a month.

Note: In addition to diverse basic wage rates, the variations in the earnings shown are due to differences in (a) overtime rates and qualifying conditions, (b) other monetary entitlements, (c) manning levels.
