HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 c591W
Mr. Lee

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of United Kingdom energy resources is provided from solar energy picked up by space satellites and converted into radio signals from earth; if he is satisfied that adequate research is being undertaken in the United Kingdom into this source of energy; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eadie

None. Solar energy is used to power space satellites but the technology does not exist to enable significant quantities of energy to be relayed to earth by radio. Such a development would be extremely expensive and could pose serious environmental problems. No research on these solar power stations is being undertaken in the United Kingdom although the Government are keeping informed on the progress of studies in other countries. I am satisfied with the position and do not intend to make a statement.
