Mr. Giles Shaw

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the current car mileage allowances paid to doctors, nurses and community health workers, including physiotherapists; when these were last reviewed; when next they will be reviewed; and how they compare with car allowances currently paid to the general Civil Service.

NHS standard and regular user mileage rates are reviewed with effect from 1 April each year and the public transport rate more frequently. All rates are currently under review. The present rates for all NHS staff are as follows:

Standard rates effective from 1 April 1977:
501–1000 cc 1001–1750 cc Over 1750 cc
Per mile 10.9p 13.5p 14.7p
Regular use rates effective from 1 April 1977:
501–1000 cc 1001–1500 cc Over 1500 cc
Lump sums £140 £169 £197
Per mile (first 7,200 miles) 7.8p 8.4p 10.3p
Per mile thereafter 4.9p 5.8p 7.5p
Public transport rate effective from 1 December 1978:
6.7p per mile

Civil Service mileage rates are as follows. There is no Civil Service regular user scheme:
