HC Deb 20 June 1979 vol 968 c606W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if there are any functions which education departments of regional councils are responsible for which were not the responsibility of education departments prior to local government reorganisation.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The main duties placed on local authority education departments since local government reorganisation are statutory responsibility for the careers service under the Employment and Training Act 1973, and for the provision of education for severely mentally handicapped children under the Education (Mentally Handicapped Childdren) (Scotland) Act 1974. They also became responsible in May 1975 for the appointment and administration of school and college councils under the Local Goverenment (Scotland) Act 1973.
