HC Deb 20 June 1979 vol 968 c595W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will carry out an investigation into the £180,000 repair bill occasioned by defects in the new Liverpool teaching hospital, Edge Hill, the cost of which will have to be met by the Liverpool area health authority.

Dr. Vaughan

I understand that the main items of expenditure are for strengthening the electrical supply to and within the hospital to meet peak demand and for modification of dirty linen lifts to prevent over loading Other sums relate to changes to accommodate new developments and requirements in post mortem rooms, laboratories and theatres One item is for replacement of incinerators provided in the first phase of the hospital some years ago.

Some extra work is inevitable in all large hospital building projects to take into account interim developments in standards of provision and other requirements, and I do not see the need for further inquiry in this instance.
