HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 c383W
19. Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will make a statement on regional development grants.

Mr. David Mitchell

In the debate on the Gracious Speech on 21 May, my right hon. Friend informed the House that he was studying the whole context of regional policy and reviewing the assistance available to industry generally and in the regions. This includes assistance through regional development grants. Good progress is being made in this review, and he will make a statement when it is completed.

Mr. John Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what estimate he has made of the effects on employment of delays of paying regional development grants in Wales in the current year; and how much is involved.

Mr. David Mitchell

The four months' delay in the payment of regional development grant is estimated to result in a reduction of £25 million in payments of grant in Wales in 1979–80. It is not expected that this will have any effect on prospects for employment.
