Mr. Pavitt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the total amount paid as a fringe benefit to employees by their employers in respect of subscriptions to the British United Provident Association and similar organisations in England and Wales for the last year convenient for his records.

Mr. Peter Rees,

pursuant to his reply[Official Report, 25 May 1979; Vol. 967. c. 304],gave the following answer:

The best estimate is that about £35 million was paid on behalf of employees in 1977.
