HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc397-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in support of the Government's policy of reducing public expenditure, he will take whatever action may prove necessary to ensure that no civil servant or public employee receives in salary and expenses more than that paid to the Ministers in charge of the Department for which he works.

Mr. Channon

I have been asked to reply.

No.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the actual or estimated savings to the Treasury if every civil and public servant re-; ceived salaries at no higher level than the Minister in charge of the Department.

Mr. Channon

I have been asked to reply.

The saving on the Civil Service salary bill would be about £39 million per annum. There is no centrally available information in respect of other public servants, for whom I have no direct responsibility.
