HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc457-8W
Mr. Peter Robinson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what measures he plans to take to avoid a further occurrence of the periodic flooding of part of Knocknagoney Avenue, Belfast; and if he will investigate the failure of sections of the Department of the Environment to respond to calls from residents, which, if acted upon, could have saved much loss and inconvenience on Monday 11 June.

Mr. Goodhart,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 15 June 1979; Vol. 968, c. 358], gave the following answer:

Because of the substantial capital cost involved and the comparatively few occasions when there is such a heavy rainfall, it would be impracticable to provide road drainage to cope with the sort of abnormal weather experienced in this area on 11 June.

I am satisfied that the Department's services responded immediately to the emergency call for assistance and did all that was possible in the circumstances.
