HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 c24W
Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of Scottish school leavers aged over 17 years, the number of those applying to Scottish universities for undergraduate places, both actual figures for the years 1975 to 1979 and projected estimates from 1979 to 1983, and the number of undergraduate admissions for the same years, both actual and projected; what was the percentage of admissions to applications in 1976–77; and what it will be in 1979–80 and 1982–83.

Dr. Boyson

The available information is as follows. This has been compiled with the help of the Scottish Education Department, which advises that the projections are under review.

NUMBER AND PROJECTIONS OF LEAVERS FROM SCOTTISH SCHOOLS AGED 17 AT 1 JANUARY OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR.
Thousands
1975–76 14.4
1976–77 14.7
1977–78 15.2
1978–79 15.2
1979–80 15.8
1980–81 16.6
1981–82 17.6
1982–83 17.2

It is estimated that about 6,400 of the 14,400 1975–76 leavers applied to enter Scottish universities in 1976–77 but this information is not available for later years.

In each of the academic years 1976–77 and 1977–78 about 4,600 Scottish domiciled students aged 18 entered Scottish universities direct from school. In 1976–77 this represented about 70 per cent. of the 6,400 applicants.

Projections of applications and admissions are not available in this detail.
