HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc25-6W
Mr. Mellor

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the amount of public funds made available for research into retinitis pigmentosa in the last year for which figures are available; and what were the comparative figures for each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Macfarlane

The Medical Research Council estimates that its expenditure on the research directly related to retinitis pigmentosa for the financial year 1977–78 was £57,000, compared with £40,000 for 1976–77. Information about earlier years is not available. The council also supports a considerable amount of research in the broader fields of neurochemistry, visual physiology, genetics and cell biology which may in the long term have a bearing on retinitis pigmentosa.
