Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidance he has given, or will be giving, to local authorities about the need urgently to replace staff, including night staff, as they retire from service in local authority homes for the elderly; and if such staff will be excluded from any guidance he gives about the recruitment of local government personnel.

Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of of State for Social Services what decision has been taken about the use of the two nurses' homes at St. Nicholas hospital, Plumstead.

Dr. Vaughan

The older building will be used for resident staff. In the newer building, the staff sitting rooms and classrooms

to the local authority associations the importance I attach to the staffing of residential homes, and I recognise the difficulties of making staff savings in this area.
