HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 c80W
Mr. John Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the establishment figures and staff-in-post figures separately on 3 May for (a) the Wages Inspectorate, inspectors and backup staff, (b) the Health and Safety Executive, (c) the Disablement Resettlement Service, and (d) the Race Relations Employment Advisory Service; and if he will give an assurance that these staff levels will be maintained or expanded.

Mr. Mayhew

I regret that staffing figures are not available as requested for 3 May. The complements and numbers of staff in post on 1 April 1979 were as as follows:

Complement Staff in post (including casuals)
Wages Inspectorate 321 299
Health and Safety Executive 4,340 4,286
Race Relations Employment Advisory Service 32 31

At 1 April 1979 the resources allocated to the Disablement Resettlement Service amounted to the equivalent of 1,180 staff. This Service is not entirely separate from other local office activities and the disposition of staff between functions therefore varies from day to day.

Levels of staffing in the Department, the MSC and HSE are being reviewed and it is not possible at this stage to say to what extent this review will affect plans for the future staffing of the services detailed above.
