§ Mr. Alfred Morrisasked the Secretary of State for Energy what representations he has received about protecting disabled motorists who cannot walk or use public transport from the effects of petrol shorttages; whether these representations have covered the needs of disabled non-drivers, who rely on the use of a car for mobility away from home just as much as disabled drivers; what replies he has sent; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GrayMy right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services has received a number of representations on this matter. I am of course concerned to ensure that disabled drivers are not disadvantaged by the present shortage. Reasonable economies on the part of the public generally together with solutions to some patchiness in distribution which I am urgently pursuing with the industry should obviate the need for Government intervention in what is basically only a small shortfall in supply.
§ Mr. Rodgersasked the Secretary of State for Energy what proposals he has to ensure alternative economies in the use of petrol in order to achieve savings equivalent to those expected to arise from the abolition of vehicle excise duty.
