HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc58-9W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he intends to take to protect endangered species of wildlife; and, in particular, if he will take steps to impose a moratorium on whaling, ban the import of sperm oil, and take other action to prevent over-fishing.

Mr. Monro

The Government are reviewing the adequacy of existing measures for protecting endangered species of wildlife and are considering the new measures made necessary by the EEC directive on the conservation of wild birds and other international undertakings, including bringing the import of sperm oil under licence.

The International Whaling Commission presently recommends that no catches should be made of certain species of whale but has not advocated a complete ban. My right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has recently announced further conservation measures to protect fish stocks.
