HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc36-7W
Mr. Ancram

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the present ratio of administrators to teachers in education in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Information about the number of local authority employees engaged specifically in administering education is not available centrally. In December 1978, however, the number of lecturers and teachers was 64,183 and the number of "other staff" employed in education was 41,695—both figures full-time equivalent. The latter figure includes—among others—janitors, cleaners, school meals staff, school auxiliaries and technicians, and clerical staff, in addition to those engaged on educational administration as such.
