HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 c522W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current economic price of the average school meal; and what he expects it to be in September 1980 and September 1981. respectively.

Dr. Boyson

The average cost of a school meal in 1979–80 is estimated to be about 54p at November 1978 prices.

It is not possible to say what the average cost might be in subsequent financial years.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current subsidy paid in respect of school meals in total and in respect of a single meal; what proportion of total meal costs this represents; and what proportion of school meal costs will be met by subsidy after his proposal to increase the school meal price to 30p comes into operation on 1 August.

Dr. Boyson

I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
