They receive no remuneration from the Department in respect of their membership of the committee.

There is at present one vacancy and one place filled in rotation by a representative of different Royal colleges. In addition to members from the health departments and representatives of health authorities, there are observers for the committee of vice-chancellors and principals, the council for post-graduate medical education, general medical services committee, undergraduate deans and medical assistants.
§ Mr. Forresterasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what criteria are taken into account when appointing lay people to positions on committees of the National Health Service.
§ Mr. Patrick JenkinApart from family practitioner committees, and advisory committees consisting wholly of professional members, there is no formal committee structure in the National Health Service. In appointing members of regional health authorities, I take account of factors such as background experience, commitment to the Health Service, age, health, and a geographical spread of interests. I expect those charged with making appointments to area health authorities, family practitioner committees and community health councils to adopt similar criteria.
