§ Mr. McQuarrieasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether, to make conservation measures more effective, he will take steps to introduce a one net regulation, prohibiting all vessels within the United Kingdom's 200 miles 715W zone from carrying more than one net size.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerIn the negotiations for a revised common fisheries policy, I will continue to insist on adequate control arrangements, including controls on the carriage of nets. At this stage I am not convinced that United Kingdom interests would be served by the introduction of a "one net rule" on a national basis.
§ Mr. McQuarrieasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if, following the admission by West Germany that her fishermen exceeded the agreed. quota of North Sea cod in 1978, and following allegations by West German fishermen that Denmark and the Netherlands had done the same, he will affirm in the Council of Ministers that the United Kingdom is not willing to accept such quotas alone as being effective means of conservation, and that they must be supplemented by more specific conservation regulations and measures which effectively and equitably limit fishing effort through a comprehensive licensing and reporting system, operated in conjunction with fishing plans.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerI agree that a revised common fisheries policy will need to provide not only for national catch quotas but also for a comprehensive conservation policy and an effective catch reporting system.
