HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc661-2W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will consider the introduction and the implementation of methods specifically geared to reduce the general public's consumption of drugs prescribed within the National Health Service.

Dr. Vaughan

The Department is already engaged in various measures to help develop a more economical and rational approach to the use of the pharmaceutical services, with a view to making all concerned more aware of the proper place of drugs in treatment and their limitations, and to promoting a commonsense self-reliance in the management and avoidance of minor disorders. I shall continue, in consultation with the medical and pharmaceutical pro- fessions, to foster such measures, and shall be pleased to consider any further specific suggestions which the hon. Member may care to make.
