HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc674-5W
Mr. Field

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will update to May 1979 the answer given to the hon. Member for Birkenhead, 22 May,Official Report, c. 114-16.

Mrs. Chalker

I shall write to the hon. Member as soon as the necessary information has been assembled.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost in social security and other benefits of 2 million unemployed; and what would be the extra cost over that already being paid.

Mrs. Chalker

At 1979–80 average benefit levels, about £2,050 million and £550 million respectively.

Dr. McDonald

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated effect on expenditure on unemployment and supplementary benefit of every extra 100,000 unemployed (a) at 1978 survey prices and (b) at 1979–80 benefit rates.

Mrs. Chalker

Of the order of £100 million and £110 million respectively.

Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many citizens from other EEC countries are currently in receipt of social security and other welfare benefits in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Prentice

Citizens of other EEC countries qualify for United Kingdom social security and other welfare benefits on the same basis as United Kingdom citizens. The information requested is not therefore available.

Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in what respects the welfare benefits available to EEC citizens in the United Kingdom are not available to United Kingdom citizens in other EEC countries.

Mr. Prentice

Availability of benefit in another EEC country would depend on whether a comparable benefit was provided in the country concerned, the qualifying conditions for that benefit, whether EEC or other international agreements applied and the conditions under which the United Kingdom citizen was present in that country.

The detailed information could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
