HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 c447W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what action he intends taking in the light of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development report which forecasts a large increase in unemployment within the coming year.

Mr. Jim Lester

The Government's policy for maintaining and increasing employment is to restore incentives, encourage efficiency and create a climate in which commerce and industry can create more jobs; but what happens to employment depends partly on the response of the private sector to the new opportunities given by the Budget and partly on responsible pay bargaining.
