HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc450-1W
Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many male and female employees there were in the United Kingdom, Scotland and the Edinburgh travel-to-work area in May of each year from 1965; and how many males and females were unemployed, respectively, in each of these months.

Mr. Jim Lester

The first table below gives available estimates of the numbers of employees in employment for the areas specified. Figures are given for the United Kingdom and Scotland for June each year from 1965 to 1978 and for March 1979, the latest date for which they are available. For the Edinburgh travel-to-work area, for which annualJune-estimates are made, information is readily available only from 1971 and the latest is for 1976.

The second table gives corresponding unemployment figures.
