HL Deb 26 July 1979 vol 401 c2147WA
Lord INGLEWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will review the procedures followed by police authorities when appointing a chief constable, so that in place of the present system of short interviews by a sub-committee of the police authority with no guarantee that any member has had experience of making appointments to very senior positions, a system should be worked out which is no less thorough than the well tried procedure for selecting outstanding police constables for the special course at Bramshill.

Lord BELSTEAD

No. My right honourable friend the Home Secretary takes the view that the form of interview is properly a matter for police authorities.
