§ Mr. Newensasked the Lord Privy Seal if he will make a statement on British relations with Nicaragua following the departure of President Somoza and the collapse of his regime.
§ Mr. LuceBritish relations with Nicaragua have recently been minimal. We have had no resident embassy there since 1975 and no non-resident ambassador accredited since May this year. There has been no Nicaraguan ambassador in London since 1975.
We welcome the resignation of ex-President Somoza, whose inhumane actions we had publicly deplored, and we hope that it will lead to a return to democratic processes and the protection of human rights.
