HC Deb 23 July 1979 vol 971 cc90-2W
Mr. Conlan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to ensure that cases from hon. Members referred to the child benefit centre, Washington, are expeditiously dealt with.

Mrs. Chalker

Cases referred to the child benefit centre from hon. Members are given immediate priority. For the time being, in cases where the delay is the result of industrial difficulty, hon. Members will receive an acknowledgement of their letter and an assurance that the case referred is being examined. I hope hon. Members will understand that this will enable staff to concentrate on the important work of processing claims. A full reply will be sent only if difficulties persist or if there are additional factors contributing to the delay.
