§ Mr. MacfarlaneNo. I accept the view of the Agricultural Research Council that the work of the institute is essential for the advancement of physiological knowledge in farm animals which is of beiefit in agroculture and medicine. Authority for experiments likely to cause pain is required under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876, administered by the Home Department, and such experiments are subject to inspection by the cruelty to animals inspectorate.
