Mr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many primary schools in Wales have classes with Welsh as the sole or main medium of instruction;

(2) how many primary schools in Wales use Welsh only to a minor extent as a medium of instruction;

(3) in what percentage of (a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools in Wales no Welsh is taught;

(4) how many primary schools had adopted the bi-lingual project method by the end of 1978;

(5) how many primary schools in Wales used a project to teach Welsh other than the bi-lingual project up to the end of 1978.

Information relating to September 1977 on the teaching of Welsh and its use as a medium of instruction in primary and secondary schools in Wales is contained in the edition of "Statistics of Education in Wales "published in October 1978 by Her Majesty's Stationery Office on behalf of the Welsh Office. A copy is available in the Library. The figures for 1978 will be published later this year.
