HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 cc487-8W
Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of teachers in primary schools in Scotland during the years 1974 to 1978 held ordinary or honours degrees.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

At September of each year the percentage numbers of teachers in education authority primary schools in Scotland holding an ordinary or honours degree were as follows:

Ordinary Honours
1974 16.3 1.3
1975 15.9 1.6
1976 15.8 1.7

The information from which those percentages are derived was not collected in 1977. The September 1978 information has not yet been analysed.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in the light of the Scottish Education Department report on the organisation of primary schools in Scotland, he will take action to ensure that the promotion structure of Scottish primary schools and the career prospects of Scottish primary teachers are no less favourable than exist in England and Wales.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Proposals from the Education Institute of Scotland for improvements in the promoted post structure in primary schools are at present under consideration by my right hon. Friend in the light of the report on the organisation and staffing of primary schools. I cannot at this stage predict the outcome.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total salary of a head teacher at the top of the scale in a Scottish primary school with (a) 101 pupils, (b) 201 pupils, (c) 301 pupils, (d) 401 pupils, (e) 501 pupils, (f) 601 pupils, (g) 701 pupils, (h) 801 pupils, (i) 901 pupils and (j) 1,001 pupils.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

As from 1 April 1979, the salaries in question, including responsibility payments and a supplement of £6 a month, are(a) 6,492; (b) £6,927; (c) £7,224; (d) £7,224; (e) £7,521; (f) £8,145; (g) £8,145; (h) £8,478; (i) £8,478; (j) £8,799.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of Scottish primary teachers hold promoted posts.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Of the full-time teachers in education authority primary schools at September 1977, the latest date for which figures are available, 9.3 per cent. were head teachers and 11.0 per cent. were assistant head teachers.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average salary of all teachers employed in primary schools in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

As from 1 April 1979 the average salary of all teachers employed by education authorities who are paid on scale 2—primary—is estimated at £4,787, including a supplement of £6 per month.
