HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 cc488-9W
Mr McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the result of his discussion with the Herring Buyers Association at the meeting held on 25 June; and if he has any plans to visit Fraserburgh and Peterhead to examine the problems of the fish processing industry at first hand.

Mr. Younger

My noble Friend the Minister of State for agriculture and fisheries in Scotland and my hon. Friend the Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food had a full discussion on 26 June with representatives of the Herring Buyers Association on the problems of the herring processors. Ministers explained the Government's general policy on aid for industry and on public expenditure but undertook, without commitment, to consider the association's case for assistance. My noble Friend will be writing to my hon. Friend about the meeting.

I have at present no plans to visit Fraserburgh or Peterhead.
