Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the present position regarding the rebuilding of Broadmoor hospital; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

Work on the redevelopment of Broadmoor hospital is proceeding on the basis that the hospital will be redeveloped as a 500-bed hospital in five distinct stages over the next 20 years at a total estimated cost of about £22 million. The planning of the advance work is well in hand and it is envisaged that building will commence in mid-1980.
