HL Deb 22 February 1979 vol 398 cc2079-80WA
The Earl of SELKIRK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many countries remain in associated status with this country and whether that status contains military or financial obligations.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

St. Lucia, which becomes independent on 22nd February, Antigua, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla and St. Vincent maintain a status of association with the United Kingdom under the West Indies Act 1967. The British Government retain responsibility only for external affairs and defence. The status contains no financial obligations though there is a British bilateral aid programme to each state.
