HC Deb 13 February 1979 vol 962 c501W
Mr. Ian Stewart

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many persons have capital in excess of £100,000, £150,000, £500,000 and £1,000,000; and how much would become available per capita of the United Kingdom population if such excess were in all cases to be redistributed evenly.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

For 1976, the latest year for which estimates are available, the figures at market values are given below. They do not take account of wealth held in certain trusts, for which

Level of total income Number of incomes above that level Excess income Income tax on excess income Excess income per capita
Gross of tax Net of tax
£ £ million £ million £ £
10,000 491,000 2,400 1,560 44 16
15,000 141,000 1,100 820 20 5
20,000 60,000 640 500 11 2

The estimates are based upon the Inland Revenue's survey of personal incomes. The income covered is that which is assessable for tax purposes and therefore excludes, for example, certain imputed income and non-taxable benefits. The data are based on a sample and subject to sampling error. Married couples are counted as one.
