HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c37W
Mr. McCrindle

asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) if he is satisfied with the operation of the Government testing centres in monitoring petrol consumption figures; and if he will make a statement;

(2) if he has received complaints from motor car manufacturers regarding the findings of the testing centres in respect of petrol consumption statistics;

(3) if there is any evident variation in findings among the Government testing centres in different parts of the United Kingdom, regarding petrol consumption statistics.

Dr. John Cunningham

There are no Government testing centres associated with the fuel consumption testing order. Responsibility for the tests lies with the manufacturers which must either carry them out themselves or commission agents to do so on their behalf. All tests must conform to the procedure specified, which follows an internationally agreed method and which was fully agreed with the motor industry. We have received no complaints from motor manufacturers.
