HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 cc36-7W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy whether he considers it feasible to extract oil from depths on the continental shelf by operating in undersea tunnels rather than from production platforms about the sea level.

Dr. Mabon

A feasibility study has indicated that there already exists the engineering means to construct such tunnels. However, there are many further problems to be considered before it can be concluded that they may be used to extract oil safely from depths on the continental shelf. Furthermore, costs will be high and the economics of such an operation need further study.
