asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he is satisfied that the present regulations affecting the berthing, loading and unloading of oil tankers are adequate.

34. Mr. Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will undertake a review of safety standards governing tanker loading and unloading at oil terminals in the United Kingdom and from installations offshore.

Mr. William Rodgers

The Government are never wholly satisfied about safety, and the Health and Safety Executive is currently preparing proposals for new regulations on the handling of all dangerous goods in ports, including the relevant equipment. Any lessons learned from the recent disaster in Bantry Bay will be very carefully studied and taken into account by the Executive and the Government Departments concerned.
