HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c19W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the evacuation of British citizens from Iran.

Mr. Judd

The unsettled situation in Iran has reduced the British community from last year's peak of 10,000 to fewer than 2,000 at present. The great majority of these have returned to Britain under their own arrangements but on a number of occasions we have provided Royal Air Force or Royal Navy transport where no prompt or secure civil means were available. We are naturally watching the predicament of our community in Iran very closely and have their safety much in mind.
