HC Deb 21 December 1979 vol 976 cc510-1W
Mr. Dorrell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many overseas students are currently studying at British technical colleges on A-level courses.

Dr. Boyson

In November 1977 there were 10,323 overseas students enrolled on A-level courses at further education establishments in England and Wales. Figures for 1978 and 1979 are not yet available, but I will write to my hon. Friend with the comparable information for 1978 shortly.

Mr. William Shelton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the number of overseas students in British universities in 1978–79.

Dr. Boyson

I regret I gave my hon. Friend the wrong figures in reply to his supplementary question on 18 December 1979. The correct answer is that the number of overseas students in British Universities rose consistently to 36,534 in 1978–79, after which they fell to about 35,000 in 1979–80: about half of these were postgraduates and half under graduates.
