Mr. Brother tonasked the Secretary of State for Industry when he proposes to convert the National Maritime Institute into a non-governmental research association; whether that research association will be in receipt of public funds; and whether its functions will be quasi-autonomous.
§ Mr. David MitchellNMI is expected to change into a non-Government research association or other industrial research laboratory in approximately three years. The institute in its new form will be free, as now, to seek Government funding under the Rothschild principles for part of its income. Thus it will be no different from other research associations and industrial research laboratories. The new organisation is expected to be autonomous.
