Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many inspectors have been appointed by the Health and Safety Executive for the purpose of receiving the written notice of building operations or works of engineering construction required under section 127(6) of the Factories Act 1961; in what form the appointments were made; and how many employers have been made aware of the inspector appointed for their area;

(2) how many inspectors have been appointed by the Health and Safety Executive for the purpose of receiving the written notice of accidents which factory occupiers are required by section 80 of the Factories Act 1961 to report; in what form the appointments were made; and how many individual factory occupiers

In making its report on the investigation into the accident the Health and Safety Executive did not consider it relevant to record the number of visits made by inspectors. I understand that no evidence of the breaches of statutory duty referred to in the report was apparent on the last visit before the accident.
