HC Deb 17 December 1979 vol 976 cc37-8W
Mr. Edward Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether, in the light of the situation in the United Kingdom carpet manufacturing industry, and the unfair price advantage enjoyed by United States carpet manufacturers resulting from the dual pricing policy operated by their Government, he will now raise substantially the current 23 per cent. import tariff on United States carpets.

Mr. Parkinson

The Foreign Affairs Council on 18 December will receive a report on the Commission's consultation with the United States of America about EEC imports of synthetic textiles, including the carpet sector. The Council will consider, in the light of this report, what further action should be taken.
