HC Deb 12 December 1979 vol 975 cc695-6W
Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about the revised stage 2 clearance programme in Liverpool; and how many properties are now affected.

Mr. Heseltine

Liverpool's clearance programme is primarily a matter for the local council. Its housing strategy indicates that the revised stage 2 clearance programme now comprises about 4,000 properties.

Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses are scheduled to be demolished under general clearance programmes in the following cities: Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol. Leicester, Derby and Leeds.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The table below shows the numbers of houses in clearance areas declared in these cities under part III of the Housing Act 1957 between 1 January 1978 and 30 September 1979:

Liverpool 615
London 838
Birmingham 350
Manchester 451
Newcastle Nil
Bristol Nil
Leicester Nil
Derby 642
Leeds 1,432

The acquisition for clearance of some of these houses will be dependent on the submission and confirmation of compulsory purchase orders. It cannot be assumed that all will be confirmed, with or without modification.
