HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 c701W
14. Mr. Townsend

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what new proposals the Government have to remedy the shortage of short-term rented accommodation in the inner cities.

Mr. Freeson

We have already directed more housing capital allocations to inner cities and, among other things, this is enabling a growing number of councils to provide houses for single working people and young working couples. Programmes of acquisition, rehabilitation and conversion of existing properties by local authorities and housing associations and the development of housing co-operatives and other new forms of tenure are gradually adding to the provision of housing for short-term needs. Our proposals for more flexible allocation policies and mobility quotas will also provide more short-term accommodation in inner cities.
