asked the Secretary of State for Industry, in the light of the recent National Economic Development Corporation report an opto-electronics, what he is doing to speed up investment in production technology and product and system design before Japan and the United States of America dominate this new field of technology.

The electronic components sector working party announced its recommendations on a strategy for this industry sector on 20 March. My Department will respond to these recommendations shortly.
