HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc905-6W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how often on average Department of Health and Social Security inspectors visit businesses which are responsible for deducting national insurance contributions.

Mr. Deakins

Inspectors normally visit every business at least once in every five years to check that contributions are being assessed and paid correctly. Other visits are made whenever queries or irregularities arise that cannot be cleared in any other way.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether his Department's inspectors have ever examined the national insurance records of a Fleet Street newspaper.

Mr. Deakins

Yes, either for routine checks that national insurance provisions were being complied with, or in order to clear queries or irregularities that could not be cleared in any other way.
