HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc922-3W
Mr. Ian Stewart

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will estimate, for 1977–78 and for 1978–79, the total weekly expenditure of an average family and the amounts devoted to (a) food and (b) income tax and national insurance contributions.

In 1977, the latest full year for which figures are available, average weekly expenditure per household was £71.84, of which £17.74 was spent on food. Average income tax and national insurance contributions combined were £17.73.
