HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 c710W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children in the county districts of the Greater Manchester metropolitan county have to attend schools for the disabled; and if she is satisfied with educational provision for these children.

Miss Margaret Jackson

In January 1978 there were 9,597 pupils assessed by the 10 local education authorities in the Greater Manchester metropolitan county as suffering from a disability of mind or body and placed in special schools. It is for each local education authority to determine how best to meet the individual needs of handicapped children.
