Mr. George Gardiner

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the saving in administrative costs of raising the starting-point of capital transfer tax from £25,000 to (a) £100,000 and (b) £200,000.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 3 April 1979; Vol. 965, c. 601], gave the following answer:

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the saving in administrative costs of raising personal allowances far enough to exempt from income tax altogether (a) two-and-a-half million taxpayers, and (b) five million taxpayers.
