asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many students from the county districts of the Greater Manchester metropolitan county go to universities or polytechnics.

In 1977–78 there were about 11,000 full-time and sandwich home students residing in the Greater Manchester metropolitan county at universities in the United Kingdom and some 10,000 at polytechnics in England and Wales. Of those in polytechnics, 4,200 were part-time students: the numbers attending part-time at universities are not readily available.
